Encoding.com Chooses The Rackspace Cloud for Faster Cloud Hosting

Encoding.com Makes the Move to Deliver Accelerated Video Encoding without Increasing Its Costs

SAN ANTONIO – January 12, 2010 – The Rackspace® Cloud, the cloud computing division of Rackspace Hosting (NYSE:RAX), today announced that Encoding.com, the popular Internet-based video encoding provider, now relies on Cloud Servers, Rackspace’s enterprise-class IaaS offering, to support its rapidly growing computing and hosting needs.  Using the power of Cloud Servers, Encoding.com expects to increase the average speed at which it can deliver studio-quality video encoding services to its users by more than two-fold without incurring more hosting costs.

Launched in September 2008, Encoding.com was one of the first companies to introduce a cloud-based, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution for video encoding.  Encoding.com’s business model is to provide guaranteed turn-around times for encoding services at a fraction of the cost of in-house encoding.  The company is said to have encoded more than three and a half million videos to date including a recent peak of 100,000 videos in just one weekend.  Using this on-demand approach to high quality video encoding has driven the company’s growth and attracted noted customers such as MTV Networks, CarDomain and Brightcove.

“We offer a studio-class service at industry-leading encoding speeds with guaranteed service level agreements.  We need a cloud solution that is powerful, dynamic and stable,” said Jeff Malkin, chief operating officer, Encoding.com.  “With their Fanatical Support, rapid response and personal attention, The Rackspace Cloud helps us focus on what we know best – video encoding.”

Each Cloud Server comes with a specific amount of guaranteed CPU power.  However, Cloud Servers customers can take advantage of extra processing power – at no additional cost – if and when the host machines are below their peak load.  This unique “CPU bursting” capability of Cloud Servers can result in two significant benefits for Encoding: 1) faster service for their customers, and 2) reduced computing costs because of their ability to consume more processing power during peak times without incurring an additional fee.

The Disk and CPU efficiency of the two leading IaaS cloud computing platforms were recently analyzed through research commissioned by Rackspace and conducted by The Bitsource, a technology research lab.  The results of The Bitsource analysis highlight important advantages of utilizing Cloud Servers from The Rackspace Cloud.

The performance, ease of use, and reliability of The Rackspace Cloud helps Encoding.com to meet its SLA commitments (such as never letting a video sit in a queue for more than four minutes).  With the flexibility that Cloud Servers offers to burst, companies like Encoding.com are more able to deliver an improved experience to their customers without increasing costs.

“We are finding that customers are not choosing us for performance alone,” said Emil Sayegh, general manager, The Rackspace Cloud.  “A broad range of companies – from innovative start-ups like Encoding.com to large enterprises – are choosing The Rackspace Cloud because of our comprehensive, worry-free approach to cloud computing so that customers can focus on what they do best.  We take great care to help our customers with their total hosting experience which starts with our human touch known as Fanatical Support, and extends to optimal system performance, uptime, and ease of use.”

Rackspace Cloud and FathomDB Join Forces to Streamline Database Management

// December 17th, 2009 // Comments Off // Press Releases

Y Combinator’s FathomDB Utilizes Rackspace Cloud API to Offer Relational Database Service in the Cloud

SAN ANTONIO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Rackspace® Cloud, the cloud computing division of Rackspace Hosting (NYSE:RAX), today announced the latest addition to Rackspace’s popular Cloud Tools ecosystem. FathomDB, a leader in Database-as-a-Service (DaaS), enables businesses and developers to easily manage their MySQL databases in the cloud. Now built on The Rackspace Cloud’s open, standards-based API, FathomDB provides a seamless database management experience that leverages Cloud Servers and frees users from time-consuming system administration tasks.

FathomDB helped launch the DaaS industry by offering an interactive user interface and analytics engine to support relational databases in the Cloud – initially just using Amazon EC2 and S3, but now by also leveraging The Rackspace Cloud portfolio. Handling many arduous but necessary steps required to run databases, FathomDB offers a range of time-saving features, including automated backups and routine maintenance tasks, powerful analytic tools, real-time monitoring and performance graphs for optimizing code, and easy point-and-click configuration.

FathomDB chose to become a strategic partner with The Rackspace Cloud because of its reputation for Fanatical Support®, its standards-based and open approach to cloud computing, and its focus on simplifying technology.

“Because we’ve always strived to take the pain out of running databases, The Rackspace Cloud was a natural choice for us to team up with. We share the same philosophy of openness and are united in the goal of making cloud computing easy,” said Justin Santa Barabara, CEO, FathomDB. “By joining their burgeoning ecosystem, we not only attract new customers through their Cloud Tools website, but we become a part of The Rackspace Cloud family.”

General Manager of The Rackspace Cloud, Emil Sayegh, is excited to offer customers a competitive relational database service for the cloud by partnering with FathomDB. “Ensuring that our cloud is reliable and scalable, and delivering a Fanatical Support experience to our customers and partners are primary objectives for us. We support strategic partnerships because they extend the power of our cloud offerings. By working together with FathomDB, as well as the Cassandra open source project, we are simplifying the challenging nature of scaling databases in the cloud. It is through transparent relationships like these that we can solve many customer needs; meanwhile our competitors are trying to solve these problems alone.”

FathomDB was featured as one of VentureBeat’s list of “Ten Y Combinator companies that want to revolutionize social networking, search, databases and anything else you can think of.” The San Francisco-based company is the latest addition to Rackspace’s Cloud Tools ecosystem. Developers can run databases on The Rackspace Cloud using FathomDB for as little as $0.02 per hour. To get started, visit the FathomDB website. The Rackspace Cloud Powers Posterous’ Popular Blogging Service

// November 10th, 2009 // Comments Off // Press Releases

SAN ANTONIO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Rackspace® Cloud, the cloud computing division of Rackspace Hosting (NYSE:RAX), today announced that Posterous, the popular blogging service, has chosen the company’s comprehensive portfolio of cloud services to support its rapidly growing computing power and storage requirements.

Posterous gives users an easy way to create high quality blogs without the headache of manually maintaining it themselves. Members can simply update their page with text, pictures or video by sending it directly to an email address and Posterous does the rest. This automated approach to blogging has helped to drive the company’s growth since its launch last year.

“We built a dead simple application for everyone – from geeks to soccer moms – to share thoughts, pictures and videos, and we needed a cost effective hosting solution to run it,” said Sachin Agarwal, Co-Founder of Posterous. “We had turned to The Rackspace Cloud for affordability, the ability to spin up new servers in seconds, uptime and for Fanatical Support. We’ve been so happy with the service that we have now made the decision to switch to Rackspace Cloud Files, from Amazon’s S3, for our new storage needs.”

The Rackspace Cloud reduces IT infrastructure complexity and expense for Posterous by offering the ability to instantly expand compute power during times of high demand. As an example, when the new iPhone 3G S became available, Posterous saw a 400% increase in video uploads from their users. The Rackspace Cloud helped Posterous handle the load with ease, transcoding all the videos and rapidly preparing them for online viewing.

Posterous utilizes The Rackspace Cloud to power all their compute operations, starting with email processing. When a blog post is sent to Posterous in an email to post@posterous.com, virtual server instances handle the processing required to convert the content to the appropriate format and ship it to the database, which is also powered by Rackspace server instances. In addition, Posterous leverages The Rackspace Cloud as application servers for the frontend Ruby on Rails application that presents user content in a blog-style format for visitors.

The Rackspace Cloud helps developers and IT managers – from startups, like Posterous, to enterprises – minimize the hassles, upfront investments and high costs associated with dedicated hardware while offering the ability to easily scale hosting resources.

“Our commitment to remove the hassles, complexity and expense of IT infrastructure complements Posterous’ vision. They make blogging easy, and we make hosting easy,” said Emil Sayegh, general manager, The Rackspace Cloud. “Posterous, like other customers, are coming to The Rackspace Cloud because we make IT tasks simple through our technology and award winning Fanatical Support.”

Posterous continues to try to drive growth by offering new capabilities and content such as the recent launch of background themes for blogs. Later this year, Posterous reports that they intend to begin storing all new media sent to post@posterous.com, including photos, MP3s, documents and videos, on Cloud Files, the unlimited storage offering from The Rackspace Cloud.

About Posterous

Posterous, founded in 2008, is a blogging platform that helps users post content online fast and easy using email. The fast growing service supports any file type including video and speeds the blogging process by autoposting content in attractive galleries and formats.

ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Hometown Website Supports Extreme Peaks of Traffic with The Rackspace Cloud

// October 29th, 2009 // Comments Off // Press Releases

Design Firm Cybernautic Switches to Cloud Sites for Handling of Hundreds of Thousands of Site Visitors During Production and Broadcast of Emmy-Winning Show

SAN ANTONIO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Rackspace® Cloud, the cloud computing division of Rackspace Hosting (NYSE:RAX), today announced it enabled Cybernautic, a web design firm, to deliver a significant feat: host the website for ABC’s Emmy award-winning reality show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition without a single failure, serving millions of visitors continuously throughout the life of the project.

Cybernautic taps The Rackspace Cloud to keep its estimated 200 client websites up and running, including the recently constructed site for Brady Homes, the builder featured in this last Sunday’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition episode. The site handled more than 300,000 hits since going live including a spike of 41,000 users at once during peak times, such as during taping and construction, and immediately following the house “reveal.”

Cybernautic made the switch to The Rackspace Cloud when it was asked to design, build and host the ExtremeBradyHomes.com website as part of the popular show. The Extreme Makeover producers warned Cybernautic that the website would go down either during the taping and construction, or within 48 hours of the show’s initial airing. It was inevitable, according to the producers, based on historical experience with websites crashing for previous episodes. Cybernautic said they did not want to take any chances by using their dedicated servers, and turned to Rackspace Cloud Sites because of its reputation for scalability.

“In over 150 shows, it has been rare to find an Internet hosting company that was equipped to handle the traffic of thousands of people coming to a builder’s website,” said Conrad Ricketts, executive producer at Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. “No doubt this is a testament to The Rackspace Cloud for handling what, in most cases, has been an impossible task. And, without failure, The Rackspace Cloud was able to keep the pipeline open to hundreds of subcontractors and trade workers, and thousands of volunteers who wanted to step up to help a family.”

Chad Parker, president and CEO of Cybernautic, said, “I have been impressed with the speed of the sites we run on Cloud Sites and amazed at the scalability. We haven’t had a single performance issue, even with all the heavy traffic the site received,” said Parker. “We have also been impressed with Cloud Servers, which we are using for other client projects that require greater control.”

Cloud Sites enables seamless scaling during unpredictable usage spikes, such as those Cybernautic realized during the Extreme Makeover construction period, and following the airing of the episode. Parker said price was also a key consideration, as his design firm has been growing steadily, and the cost of adding more servers to account for scaling had been increasing significantly.

The ExtremeBradyHomes.com website—plus the associated Facebook and Twitter accounts accounting for some 13,000 fans—served as hub of all online activity associated with the episode. Extreme Makeover released a minimum of two news releases per day through the site, and reporters covering the project depended on the site for these news updates. Over 5,000 volunteer applications were submitted via the site for roughly 2,500 available positions.

“We are proud to assist ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in changing the lives of the Montgomery family, and bringing the community together for such a great cause. The fact that we are one of the only web hosting services that has been able to seamlessly handle the website traffic generated by this popular primetime show speaks volumes about the value of our cloud services, especially the scalability, ease of use, and affordability,” said Emil Sayegh, general manager, The Rackspace Cloud. “We’re in the business of making IT easy and helping our customers focus on what they’re good at – in this case, helping families through charitable activities.”

Pangea Foundation Leverages Rackspace Cloud Hosting to Deliver Instant and Scalable Natural Disaster Recovery Software Solutions

// October 22nd, 2009 // Comments Off // Press Releases

SaaS Provider Utilizes Portfolio of Rackspace Hosting Solutions to Meet IT Needs

SAN ANTONIO –  November 17, 2008 – Rackspace® Hosting’s (NYSE:RAX) cloud division, Mosso®, today announced that Pangea Foundation™, an innovative  non-profit SaaS provider that delivers enterprise-class software solutions to non-profit organizations, is using Cloud Sites™  to provide hosted services to a growing number of its 1,500 non-profit customers. Pangea has been a Rackspace managed hosting customer since early 2007, and also utilizes hosted Exchange mailboxes from Mailtrust, Rackspace’s email hosting division and most recently came to Mosso for assistance in providing online natural disaster support.

After creating the disaster relief software solutions used by 211 San Diego during the 2007 San Diego fires and by 211 Iowa during the 2008 Midwest floods, Pangea quickly realized that cloud computing technologies are the ideal solution for fast-moving conditions associated with natural disasters which require quick set up and the ability to handle huge traffic spikes. As a result, Pangea turned to Rackspace’s cloud hosting solution, Cloud Sites, to instantly deploy software that provided much-needed information to the many victims of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike along the Gulf Coast in August of this year. The solution was simple, easy to set up and affordable, using a cost-effective, pay-as-you-grow pricing model which provided Pangea cost savings when site traffic was low.

“In addition to using Rackspace’s managed hosting offering to run our mission-critical software applications, we now rely on Cloud Sites during natural disasters to get our 211 sites up fast and to meet the demand that can be caused by unpredictable traffic spikes,” said Kraig Kuipers, president and CEO, Pangea Foundation.  “Rackspace has indeed created a hosting portfolio to meet all our IT needs with a suite of solutions that provide scalability and reliability at a lower cost.

“When we calculated the time saved by working with Rackspace’s suite of hosting solution offerings, we discovered that we had achieved a 50 percent reduction in total cost of ownership compared to our previous hosting environment” said Kristin Kuipers, Founder and Director of Programs at Pangea Foundation.  “The Cloud Hosting solution from Rackspace has proven to be a key contributor to our success, enabling us to deliver instantly scalable enterprise-class software and IT infrastructure solutions to non-profit organizations.”

Working with leading technology providers such as Rackspace, Qualcomm and Microsoft, Pangea will soon launch ReliefPoint™, a web-based software solution that will be offered to disaster relief and crisis management organizations nationwide.  Their vision is to transform  a predominately ad-hoc, paper-based structure into a  robust and infinitely scalable hosted solution that ensures these organizations are prepared to deal with the next disaster—before it happens.

“Nothing is more important to our Cloud Hosting Solution than providing the highest level of scalability for our customers’ environments, when they most need them,” stated Emil Sayegh, General Manager of Mosso, Rackspace’s Cloud Hosting Division. “Pangea’s services have a time critical component to the local communities and the non-profits who serve them. Our systems are designed to scale whenever our customers, like Pangea Foundation, most need it to scale.   It was very satisfying to also see our vision for an integrated IT hosting portfolio providing value to Pangea in their pursuit of such a noble cause.”
